Marquez Triumphs in Japanese Sprint, Championship Race Tightens
Marc Marquez secured his seventh MotoGP sprint victory of the season at the Japanese Grand Prix, reducing the championship gap to rival Jorge Martin to seven points. The reigning world champion led from start to finish at the Motegi circuit on Saturday, extending Ducati's sprint dominance at the venue to four consecutive years.
Marquez finished 2.754 seconds ahead of Brazilian rookie Diogo Moreira, who claimed his first premier-class podium after Martin and Enea Bastianini were each penalised one position for exceeding track limits on the final lap. Martin, who started from pole, lost two championship points due to the infringement.
First-Lap Incident Eliminates Three Riders
The sprint race was marked by an early collision involving Alex Marquez, who made contact with Fabio Di Giannantonio and Pedro Acosta at turn three on the opening lap. All three riders were eliminated instantly, and the incident is expected to result in a long-lap penalty for Marquez in Sunday's full-length race.
Marc Marquez remained unaware of the drama behind him, focusing on his own race strategy. Title rival Marco Bezzecchi finished sixth after a gamble on medium-compound tyres failed to pay off, ending the sprint 6.984 seconds behind the winner.
“The target was the front row from qualifying to be in the best place to do a good sprint race,” Marquez said. “We did a small modification before the race and I felt much better on the bike. Job done, and tomorrow, more.”
Track Conditions and Australian Performances
The newly resurfaced Motegi track affected several riders, with Martin's rear tyre degrading significantly on the final lap. Francesco Bagnaia, a two-time sprint winner at this venue, pitted on the last lap due to an unrideable rear tyre.
Australia's Jack Miller finished 16th for Pramac Yamaha, while Senna Agius qualified 10th in Moto2. Joel Kelso will start 23rd in Moto3 after receiving a six-place grid penalty for a yellow flag infringement.
Looking Ahead to the Grand Prix
The 24-lap Japanese Grand Prix, round 16 of the 2026 season, is scheduled for Sunday at 4pm (AEDT). Marquez holds a narrow advantage in the championship standings as the season approaches its final rounds.
This victory marks Marquez's 22nd career sprint win and his first at the Japanese circuit, reinforcing his position as a formidable contender for the title.
