Minions & Monsters Now Available for Home Viewing, Continues Box Office Success
The latest installment in the Minions franchise, Minions & Monsters, is now available for purchase or rental on digital platforms such as Prime Video. Released in theaters just over 40 days ago, the film has grossed over $473 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $85 million, placing it among the top ten highest-grossing movies of the year.
A Prequel Set in the 20th Century
This third Minions film serves as a prequel, taking audiences back to the 20th century. The story follows a tribe of Minions in search of a new 'Big Boss,' who mistakenly identify an actor as a notorious villain, leading them into the world of Hollywood. According to IGN reviewer Eric Goldman, the film is 'an ode to early Hollywood and to the power of cinema and storytelling.'
Critics have praised the film, with IGN giving it an 8 out of 10 rating and calling it 'the best one yet' in the franchise. While it did not surpass Despicable Me 4 at the box office, it remains one of the best-reviewed entries in Illumination's series.
Digital and Physical Release Details
Viewers can rent Minions & Monsters for $19.99 or purchase it digitally for $29.99. Digital extras, including behind-the-scenes featurettes, are only available with a full purchase. Prime Video also offers a bundle of all three Minions movies for $49.99, a $10 discount from the usual price.
For those who prefer physical copies, the film is available for preorder on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K. The 4K collector's edition is currently discounted on Amazon, making it comparable in price to the digital version. Physical copies will ship on September 8.
Future of the Franchise
Illumination has not announced specific plans for the next installment in the Despicable Me or Minions series. However, the studio has expanded its portfolio through a partnership with Nintendo, producing the Mario movies. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, released earlier this year, crossed the $1 billion mark globally and is the highest-grossing animated film of 2026. It is likely that Illumination will continue to focus on Nintendo projects in the near future.
When Will Minions & Monsters Arrive on Streaming?
Minions & Monsters will eventually join the rest of the Despicable Me franchise on Peacock. Based on the timeline of Despicable Me 4, which took about four months to reach the service after its 2024 theatrical release, the new Minions film is expected to be available to Peacock subscribers by the end of October.
