In a significant move towards enhancing public transportation safety, Sri Lanka launched a pioneering artificial intelligence surveillance program for long-distance buses on August 12. This initiative, which mirrors successful transportation safety measures implemented in other nations, marks a decisive step in modernizing the country's public transport infrastructure.

Strategic Implementation of AI Technology

The pilot project, inaugurated at the Kataragama Depot, introduces sophisticated AI camera systems in both state-operated and private buses. Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake has confirmed the initial deployment of 40 AI camera units, demonstrating a commitment to infrastructure modernization that prioritizes public safety.

Advanced Monitoring Capabilities

  • Driver fatigue detection
  • Drowsiness monitoring
  • Inappropriate behavior surveillance
  • Traffic rule compliance tracking
  • Seatbelt usage monitoring

Traditional Values Meet Modern Security

This initiative represents a careful balance between technological advancement and traditional administrative oversight, ensuring passenger safety while maintaining established transportation protocols. The system's implementation follows years of successful deployment in international markets, bringing Sri Lanka's public transportation infrastructure up to global standards.

"The AI technology can detect driver behaviour, monitoring signs of fatigue, drowsiness or whether the driver is engaging in any other inappropriate activities while driving," explained Minister Rathnayake during the system's unveiling.

The initiative particularly targets the safety of millions of daily commuters who rely on SLTB and private buses for long-distance travel, marking a significant advancement in the nation's public transportation safety measures.
