Ukraine's President Zelensky Appoints New Security Chief
President Volodymyr Zelensky has implemented significant changes within Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), replacing the influential Vasyl Malyuk with Major-General Yevhenii Khmara as acting head of the organisation.
The SBU serves as Ukraine's primary internal security and counter-intelligence agency. Since Russia's invasion in 2022, the service has expanded its operations to include strategic missions within Russian territory.
Leadership Transition
Malyuk, who led the SBU since 2022, established a reputation for conducting successful operations against Russian targets and eliminating suspected double agents within the organisation. His tenure included coordination of the notable "Spider Web" operation in June, which deployed over 100 Ukrainian drones against Russian air bases.
Major-General Khmara brings considerable battlefield experience, having served in combat operations against Russian forces in the Donetsk region. He participated in the preparation of the Spider Web operation and led Alpha, one of the SBU's elite divisions.
Strategic Implications
The appointment reflects Ukraine's continued emphasis on asymmetric warfare capabilities. President Zelensky indicated that Malyuk will continue leading special operations, stating Ukraine requires more "asymmetric operations against Russian forces."
Political analyst Oleksandr Notevskyi praised Khmara's appointment, noting his experience and youth as assets for the position. The SBU described him as a decorated officer involved in liberating the Kyiv region in 2022.
Parliamentary Approval Required
Khmara's appointment requires confirmation from the Ukrainian parliament, which maintains the authority to reject the nomination. The decision comes amid broader leadership changes announced by President Zelensky, including new appointments for defence minister and foreign intelligence chief positions.
These personnel changes occur as Ukraine continues its defensive operations along the eastern front lines, with increased focus on targeting Russian military infrastructure and capabilities within Russian territory.
