Academy of Motion Picture Arts Reforms Presidential Term Rules
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has implemented significant changes to its governance structure, allowing greater flexibility in presidential leadership while expanding board representation across all branches.
Presidential Term Modifications
In a decisive move to ensure institutional continuity, the Academy Board of Governors has modified bylaws governing presidential terms. Under the revised regulations, any sitting president may now serve up to four consecutive one-year terms, regardless of their overall board tenure.
Previously, presidential candidates faced restrictions if they had completed two three-year governor terms, requiring a mandatory two-year hiatus before seeking re-election. This reform eliminates such barriers, prioritizing leadership stability over rigid term limitations.
The changes directly benefit current President Lynette Howell Taylor, elected in 2025 for her first presidential term. Under previous bylaws, she would have faced term restrictions, but the new framework permits her to seek re-election for three additional consecutive terms.
Board Representation Expansion
Effective from the 2026-2027 board year, all nineteen Academy branches will maintain equal representation with three branch-elected governors each. This expansion adds additional governors to the Animation, Production and Technology, and Short Films branches.
June 2026 elections will accommodate this transition through varied term lengths of one, two, or three years for these specific branches. Standard election protocols resume in 2027, returning to the established pattern of single governor elections per branch with three-year terms.
Eligibility Requirements Reformed
The Academy has broadened governor eligibility criteria to encourage wider participation. Branch members who have served at least two years on any Academy or Academy Foundation committee, or as chairs or co-chairs of Affinity Groups, now qualify for board positions.
Additionally, the board addressed Branch Executive Committee service limitations for former governors. The new amendment establishes a six-year maximum service period on BECs following completion of governor duties, whether served consecutively or intermittently.
Implementation Timeline
Academy leadership, including CEO Bill Kramer, President Lynette Howell Taylor, and Governance Committee Chair Howard Rodman, communicated these changes directly to membership. Detailed information regarding 2026-2027 board and BEC elections will be distributed following the Academy Awards ceremony.
