Astros Star Alvarez Speaks Frankly After Heavy Defeat to Angels
The Houston Astros suffered a decisive 18-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at Daikin Park on Thursday, a result that has narrowed their lead in the American League West division to a single game over the Texas Rangers.
The defeat, which came in the deciding game of a three-game series, marks the fourth loss in ten games for Houston, who now hold a 64-64 record for the season.
Alvarez Delivers Honest Assessment
Following the match, Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez offered a candid reflection on the team's situation. Speaking through The Athletic's Chander Rome, Alvarez stated:
For us, it's a slap in the face to come out here tomorrow and get a victory.
Alvarez, who was removed from the game early, finished with one hit in one at-bat, recording a double, a run scored, and a walk.
Angels Dominate from the Mound and at the Plate
The Angels established control of the game early, scoring in the first inning. Houston briefly responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, but were held scoreless until the ninth inning.
Los Angeles added three runs in the second, six in the fourth, four in the fifth, two in the seventh, and two more in the ninth to seal the victory.
Angels shortstop Zach Neto was the standout performer, going 5-for-6 with a home run, seven runs batted in, and two walks.
On the mound, Houston starter Peter Lambert was charged with nine earned runs on eight hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings. Relievers Bryan King and Tatsuya Imai also struggled, while position player LaMonte Wade allowed two runs in an inning of relief.
For the Angels, Adam Frazier, Josh Lowe, and Moises Ballesteros each recorded two hits, while Vaughn Grissom added three. Houston managed eight hits in total compared to the Angels' 18.
What Lies Ahead for Houston
The Astros are scheduled to begin a three-game series against the Athletics at Daikin Park this weekend. The first game is set to start at 7:10 p.m. CDT on Friday.
As the regular season enters its final stretch, Houston will need to address its recent inconsistencies to maintain its position at the top of the division.
