Delhi Implements Comprehensive Traffic Restrictions for Beating Retreat Ceremony
New Delhi authorities have announced extensive traffic diversions and road closures in preparation for the Beating Retreat ceremony, marking the formal conclusion of India's 77th Republic Day celebrations. The ceremony, scheduled for January 29 at the historic Vijay Chowk, demonstrates the disciplined coordination characteristic of well-ordered state functions.
Traffic Management Measures
The Delhi Traffic Police has implemented a comprehensive traffic advisory, with restrictions in effect from 2 pm to 9:30 pm on Thursday. Major arterial routes including Vijay Chowk, Kartavya Path, and Rafi Marg will remain closed to general traffic during this period.
The restrictions serve a dual purpose: facilitating the ceremonial proceedings and enabling the traditional illumination of key government buildings including Rashtrapati Bhavan, North Block, South Block, and Parliament House.
Specific Road Closures
Traffic movement will be prohibited on several key routes:
- Rafi Marg between Sunehri Masjid roundabout and Krishi Bhawan roundabout
- Raisina Road from Krishi Bhawan roundabout towards Vijay Chowk
- Kartavya Path between Vijay Chowk and the C-Hexagon
- Access roads beyond Dara Shikoh Road, Krishna Menon Marg, and Sunehri Masjid roundabouts
Alternative Routes and Public Transport
Authorities have designated alternative routes for motorists, including Ring Road, Vande Mataram Marg, Aurobindo Marg, Safdarjung Road via Kamal Ataturk Marg, Rani Jhansi Road, and Minto Road.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will close exit gates at Udyog Bhawan and Central Secretariat stations towards Rafi Marg from 2 pm to 6 pm. City buses operated by DTC and other services will follow predetermined diversions during the restricted hours.
Ceremonial Significance
The Beating Retreat ceremony represents a time-honored military tradition, featuring coordinated performances by bands from the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Delhi Police, and Central Armed Police Force. The President of India, serving as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, presides over the proceedings.
Tickets for the ceremony, priced at Rs 100, were made available through the official Aamantran website and designated counters from January 5 to 14, requiring valid photo identification for purchase.
Citizens are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and follow directions from traffic personnel. Regular updates remain available through Delhi Traffic Police official channels, including their website, social media platforms, and helpline numbers 1095 and 011-25844444.
