Gandhi Issues Unity Warning to Feuding Congress Leaders
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi delivered a firm message to the Punjab Congress leadership during a campaign rally, emphasizing the paramount importance of party unity over individual ambitions.
Speaking at the MGNREGA Mazdoor Kisan Rally in Punjab's politically significant Malwa region, Gandhi addressed growing tensions within the state party unit with characteristic directness.
Party Unity Takes Precedence
"One player cannot win a match. We have the entire team sitting here," Gandhi stated, making clear that those unable to function as team players would be relegated to reserve positions. His remarks came amid ongoing discord targeting Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
The Congress leader emphasized institutional hierarchy, declaring that "no matter how big a leader you may be, no one is bigger than the party." This message resonated through the gathering, which included senior state leaders and national party officials.
Leadership Structure Maintained
The Congress high command has recently reinforced its position on state leadership, with party affairs in-charge Bhupesh Baghel and general secretary KC Venugopal ruling out organizational changes. The party has committed to contesting the 2027 elections under collective leadership without projecting a chief ministerial candidate.
Present at the rally were key figures including Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, demonstrating unified party presence despite internal tensions.
Economic Concerns Raised
Gandhi also addressed economic policy matters, expressing concerns about recent trade agreements. He warned of potential challenges facing agricultural and industrial sectors, particularly regarding increased imports that could affect domestic production.
"When international agricultural products enter our markets, our farmers and small industries face significant pressure," Gandhi observed, highlighting the need for protective measures for local producers.
The rally, held in the Malwa belt which contains 69 of Punjab's 117 assembly constituencies, underscored the region's electoral importance as the party prepares for upcoming state elections.
