India’s Defence Minister Calls for Mandatory Sanskrit and Vedic Mathematics in Schools
India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, has urged that Sanskrit and Vedic mathematics be made compulsory in schools, linking the move to the preservation of cultural heritage and the advancement of modern knowledge. Speaking at the Gurparv Mahamahotsav at Udaseen Ashram Ranopali in Ayodhya on Monday, Singh appealed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to introduce Vedic mathematics as a mandatory subject if his government is re-elected.
Why does Rajnath Singh support Vedic mathematics in schools?
Singh noted that Vedic mathematics is taught at the London School of Economics, and argued that making it compulsory for all children would strengthen their analytical abilities. He recalled that during his tenure as Education Minister, he had made a Sanskrit question paper compulsory and introduced Vedic mathematics, but subsequent governments reversed these measures. “That is something which still pains me,” he said.
What role does Sanskrit play in modern education?
The Defence Minister described Sanskrit as “the language of the possibilities of our future” and stressed its relevance in guiding India in the fields of knowledge and science. He emphasised the need to balance heritage and modernity, saying, “We need students who can understand Sanskrit verses as well as computer code.” Singh added that being modern does not mean speaking English, but having the ability to overcome new challenges and find solutions to contemporary problems.
How does the visit reflect on Ayodhya’s spiritual and cultural significance?
Before the event, Singh visited the Ram Temple and Hanuman Garhi in Ayodhya and offered prayers. He also inspected the newly constructed building of Narayan Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya at the Ranopali Ashram complex. Praising Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Singh said that under his leadership, both governance and the Sanatan system are moving towards excellence. He remarked that “Ayodhya itself is a culture, a civilisation and a consciousness,” and that the sun of Dharma rising from Ayodhya is illuminating the world.
What is the role of saints in preserving cultural values?
Singh highlighted the contribution of saints to religion, education, and culture, stating that a guru provides knowledge of oneself, not just of the world. He noted that saints often give questions through which people find answers to life’s challenges. “The contribution of saints to our culture is unparalleled,” he said, urging remembrance of those who endured imprisonment and sacrifice for the cause of Lord Ram.
The Defence Minister’s remarks come amid broader discussions in India on integrating traditional knowledge systems with contemporary education, a priority for the current administration.
