Rockabilly Legend Vernon Taylor Passes Away at 88
Vernon Taylor, a celebrated rockabilly artist and one of the last surviving Sun Records singers, has died at the age of 88. He passed away on July 12, 2026, after a long battle with dementia, a condition that also claimed the life of his brother, Luther, just one day earlier.
Born as Walton Alderton, Taylor grew up immersed in hillbilly music and taught himself to play guitar at age 11. His family later moved to Spencerville, Maryland, where he launched his music career. At 15, he formed a band called The Nighthawks with two classmates, and by 1956 the group had expanded to five members.
The Nighthawks performed between sets for Curley Smith and appeared on a Saturday night television show on WTTG Channel 5 from 1957 to 1960. Taylor became known for rockabilly, a style described by Vocabulary.com as an early form of rock and roll that blends country with rhythm and blues. Notable artists such as Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis also helped popularize the genre.
Kevin Booth, a fellow musician, paid tribute on Facebook, writing:
Rest in peace Vernon Taylor. He passed away a few days ago. One of the last Sun artists. I had the honor of doing a show with him and Ronnie Dove many years ago. He was a very nice man and a great performer. My prayers for his family and loved ones.
The Fabulous Hubcaps Pay Tribute
The Fabulous Hubcaps, a rock-and-roll band formed in 1974, also honored Taylor on social media. The band was inducted into the Southern Legends Entertainment and Performing Arts Hall of Fame in 2005, with Taylor performing the induction. In a Facebook post on July 15, the group shared an image of that ceremony and wrote:
The Fabulous Hubcaps are saddened to learn of the passing of Sun Record Recording Artist, Vernon Taylor (Walton Alderton). On July 17, 2005, The Hubcaps had the honor of being inducted into The Southern Legends Entertainment and Performing Arts Hall of Fame. It was Vernon who inducted us, and from that day on, a long and lasting friendship ensued between Vernon, his beautiful wife, Brenda, and The Fabulous Hubcaps.
They added:
Thank you, Vernon....for this great honor....for joining us on stage, and for always being there for us! Brenda...we love you; you're in our thoughts and prayers! Vernon....we're sure they welcomed you into Rock and Roll Heaven with open arms and big wide hugs! Rock on friend.....Rock on.....
A Career Marked by Perseverance
Taylor joined Dot Records in 1957, but after his singles Losing Game/I've Got the Blues and Why Must You Leave Me failed to chart, he was dropped. He then signed with Sun Records and released Today Is A Blue Day/Breeze, but it too was unsuccessful, leading him to leave music.
He returned to the stage in 1989 for a benefit concert, which reignited his career. He subsequently released his earlier songs along with new material, performing until his health declined.
Vernon Taylor leaves behind his wife, Brenda, and a legacy as one of the last links to the golden era of rockabilly. His contributions to music will be remembered by fans and fellow artists alike.
