Tamil Nadu Extends Maternity Leave to One Year for Third Child
The government of Tamil Nadu has announced that women government employees will now receive 365 days of maternity leave for their third child, aligning the benefit with the one-year entitlement already available for the first two children. The decision, announced by Human Resources Management Minister D Sarathkumar in the state Assembly, marks the latest step in a 15-year expansion of maternity benefits in the southern Indian state.
How Tamil Nadu's Maternity Leave Policy Has Evolved Since 2011
In 2011, the state government increased maternity leave for eligible women employees from the original 90 days to six months, or roughly 180 days. That change was the first major expansion in a policy that had previously provided only three months of leave.
The 2011 revision recognised the need for additional time for childbirth, recovery, and infant care. It set the stage for further increases in the years that followed.
From Six Months to a Full Year: Changes in 2016 and 2021
The next significant change came in 2016, when the leave period was extended from six months to nine months, or 270 days. Five years later, in July 2021, the state increased the entitlement again, this time to 12 months or 365 days. Those changes were introduced under governments led by the AIADMK and the DMK at different points during that period.
The 2021 expansion established the one-year benefit for married women government employees with fewer than two surviving children. Those with two or more surviving children, however, continued to receive a shorter entitlement for any subsequent child.
What the 2026 Change Means for Women Government Employees
The latest announcement removes that distinction. Women government employees will now receive 365 days of maternity leave for their third child, up from the previous 12 weeks. The state government said the move reflects its focus on social welfare and women's empowerment.
Minister D Sarathkumar stated in the Assembly:
“Under these circumstances, as the Tamil Nadu government is a welfare-oriented administration prioritising social welfare and women's empowerment, the maternity leave currently provided for the third child of female government employees will be enhanced from 12 weeks to 365 days.”
The progression is notable: 90 days in 2011, six months, nine months in 2016, 365 days in 2021, and now 365 days for the third child in 2026. The decision is not merely an increase in the number of days; it also removes the earlier distinction between the first two children and the third child for eligible women government employees.
Full government orders are expected to provide the detailed implementation framework.
