Claude Code Executive Ceases Manual Programming Entirely
The head of Anthropic's Claude Code division has revealed a fundamental shift in software development practices, announcing he has not written a single line of code manually since November 2025.
Boris Cherny, creator and director of Claude Code, disclosed during a recent podcast interview that artificial intelligence now generates 100 per cent of his production code. Rather than engaging in traditional programming, Cherny focuses his efforts on code review, safety verification, and strategic planning for future development projects.
Productivity Surge Through AI Integration
The transition has yielded remarkable productivity gains. Cherny reports processing between 10 and 30 pull requests daily, often coordinating multiple AI agents simultaneously. This represents a substantial increase from conventional development workflows.
"I have never enjoyed coding as much as I do today," Cherny stated, explaining that AI has eliminated repetitive and time-intensive aspects of software development.
Market Impact and Adoption
Claude Code's influence extends beyond individual productivity. The platform now generates approximately 4 per cent of all public code commits on GitHub, with higher percentages when including private repositories. Within Anthropic itself, AI systems conduct initial reviews of all pull requests before human oversight.
The tool has evolved from a modest internal project to a comprehensive development platform. Early adoption faced challenges as users struggled with terminal-based interfaces, but improvements have driven significant usage growth.
Autonomous Problem-Solving Capabilities

Future positions may emphasise strategic decision-making regarding product development priorities rather than technical implementation. However, Cherny acknowledges this transition will present challenges for many professionals.
"It's going to be painful for a lot of people," he warned, particularly as AI capabilities expand into areas previously considered exclusively human domains, such as product planning.
