England's Henry Pollock Targets Leadership Position as Six Nations Approaches
England back-row forward Henry Pollock has expressed his ambition to assume a leadership role within the national team over the next two years, as the squad prepares for their Six Nations campaign opening against Wales on February 7.
Speaking ahead of England's fixture at Twickenham, the 21-year-old Northampton Saints player reflected on his remarkable rise through the ranks, having made his senior England debut in Cardiff last March after representing the U20s side in the same tournament window.
Leadership Aspirations and Team Dynamics
Pollock outlined his strategic approach to developing his leadership credentials. "I see myself in a couple of years being that leadership role, that's something I definitely want to drive and create in my game," he stated. The forward has been working with sports psychologists to enhance his communication skills and pre-match preparation routines.
His preparation involves listening to music before matches to build intensity, then delivering motivational messages to teammates. "I like to hype the boys up, be nice and loud, geeing them up, getting everyone ready for the game," Pollock explained.
Professional Conduct and Competitive Spirit
The young forward has developed a reputation for his aggressive playing style and competitive nature, which has occasionally drawn attention from opposition supporters. Following incidents during last season's Champions Cup final, where Northampton fell to Bordeaux-Begles, Pollock has faced hostile receptions from French crowds.
However, he maintains a professional perspective on such reactions. "I like the aggressive side of rugby, that's kind of my way into games: being aggressive, being in your face," he stated, while emphasizing that away from the pitch, he considers himself a typical young person.
Commitment to Rugby Development
Pollock has adopted distinctive try celebrations, drawing inspiration from football to help promote rugby's appeal to broader audiences. "I thought: 'Let's try with the celebrations and try create something where you can be yourself in the team environment.' It's only good for the sport," he explained.
The forward's rapid progression saw him earn British and Irish Lions selection for the summer tour to Australia under Andy Farrell, before featuring in all four Autumn Tests for England under Steve Borthwick's guidance.
Six Nations Preparation
As England prepares for their home opener against Wales, Pollock expressed enthusiasm for the tournament atmosphere at Twickenham, which the team refers to as "HQ." The venue's significance as the traditional home of rugby provides additional motivation for the squad.
England will look to build on their recent performances as they begin their 2026 Six Nations campaign, with Pollock's leadership development forming part of the team's longer-term strategic planning under Borthwick's stewardship.
