Lagos State Commits N140 Billion to Social Protection Initiatives
The Lagos State government has demonstrated exemplary fiscal responsibility by allocating over N140 billion towards comprehensive social protection programs designed to support vulnerable residents across the state.
Mrs. Olayinka Ojo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, announced this substantial commitment at the Lagos State Social Protection Partners Forum, emphasizing the administration's dedication to inclusive development under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's leadership.
"The governor has demonstrated unwavering commitment to improving the lives of Lagosians through more than 20 social-focused ministries, departments and agencies, implementing over 90 social interventions backed by this significant budgetary allocation," Mrs. Ojo stated.
Structured Approach to Social Development
The financial commitment reflects a carefully coordinated social protection system targeting vulnerable populations across all local government areas. The initiative operates under the Lagos State Social Protection Policy, approved in 2020, which addresses critical areas including healthcare, education, gender equality, youth empowerment, and support for persons with disabilities.
Lagos State distinguishes itself as the only state in Nigeria with a dedicated Social Protection Coordinating Department, which serves as the secretariat for 22 identified agencies working through a structured technical framework.
"While other states have relied primarily on federal government initiatives, Lagos State has demonstrated leadership by investing taxpayer resources directly into comprehensive social protection systems," Mrs. Ojo explained.
Advanced Data Management Systems
The state is developing sophisticated data management capabilities using geospatial technology combined with community engagement to accurately identify and map vulnerable populations. This systematic approach ensures resources reach those most in need through proper identification and verification processes.
Plans for 2025 include intensified community integration through partnerships with Community Development Association chairmen, coordinators, and market leaders across Lagos State.
International Recognition and Collaboration
UN Women Country Representative Beatrice Eyong commended Lagos State's leadership in establishing inclusive social protection systems that prioritize dignity in governance. She highlighted the critical need for gender-responsive approaches, noting that fewer than one in ten people currently receive adequate social protection coverage.
UNICEF Social Policy Manager Muhammad Okorie praised Lagos for its forward-thinking approach to human capital development, emphasizing the state's long-term vision extending beyond 2026 into 2027 and its multi-sectoral commitment to social protection.
Educational Support Framework
The Lagos State Scholarship Board, under Executive Secretary Mrs. Daranijo, continues expanding collaborative efforts to ensure financial constraints do not prevent educational access. The program works closely with communities to verify family circumstances and provide necessary support for deserving students.
The forum concluded with the presentation of the Lagos State Social Protection Report 2025, titled "Leaving No One Behind: Tracking Social Protection Coverage and Vulnerability," demonstrating the state's commitment to transparent monitoring and evaluation of its social programs.
