Nigeria's High Commissioner to South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has been conferred with the rank of Senior Counsel of Nigeria by the Nigerian Law Society, according to Vanguard. The ceremony took place on Friday, November 6, 2026, at the society's Annual General Conference in Abuja, alongside four other legal professionals.
The honour carries particular weight for this region. Fani-Kayode is the senior Nigerian diplomat accredited to Mbabane, and his elevation to the Blue Silks rank places a serving envoy with direct responsibility for Eswatini among the newest figures of the Nigerian legal establishment. Head Topics reported that the award recognises his standing within the profession beyond courtroom practice.
Who received the Senior Counsel rank
Fani-Kayode was joined by Seyi Tinubu, Olufunmilayo Osifuye, Ihudiebube Chukwumdi and Alabi Olalekan Adigun. PM Parrot reported that the Nigerian Law Society conferred the rank on the five at its 2026 Annual General Conference, held under the theme, Justice for All: Non-Litigation Nigerian Law Graduates Through the Blue Silks (SCN), BOSCON and the NLS.
The society was established to serve Nigerian law graduates whose professional work extends beyond litigation, covering fields such as corporate administration, arbitration, mediation, compliance, governance, legislative drafting and research. Its certificate of registration was obtained on December 30, 2025, under Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of association.
A call for justice without privilege
In his acceptance speech, delivered by his Special Adviser on Media and Executive Assistant, Mrs Lizzy Okoji, Fani-Kayode called for greater protection of the rights and dignity of Nigerians at home and abroad.
Justice in its truest form must never be selective, he said. It must not be reserved for the privileged, the powerful or the politically connected. It must be accessible to all.
The envoy linked his diplomatic posting to this conviction. He recalled that his first official engagement upon arriving in South Africa was a town hall meeting with the Nigerian community, where he listened to their concerns and reassured them of the Federal Government's commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad.
According to him, the promotion of human rights requires courage, compassion, sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to truth.
What the rank means
The NLS President, Ambassador Dahiru Aliyu, said the Blue Silks initiative was designed to recognise professional excellence, dedication and outstanding contributions to the legal community, while encouraging younger law graduates to embrace professional ethics and continuous development.
The Chairperson of the Body of Senior Counsel of Nigeria, Hon. Mrs Elizabeth Titilayo Orebiyi, represented by Mrs Ndidi Nicholas Okoro, identified four categories under the initiative: Senior Legal Academic, Senior Corporate Counsel, Senior Legislative Counsel and Senior Law Reform Counsel.
A Senior Counsel should be a mentor, a custodian of professional values and an example to those who follow, she said.
She also encouraged younger graduates to develop expertise in technology, artificial intelligence, commercial innovation, regulatory transformation, international transactions and alternative dispute resolution.
Not a rival to the Bar
Olufunmilayo Osifuye, who chaired one of the newly conferred group and heads the NLS Physical Planning and Building Control Appeals Committee in Lagos State, clarified that the society was not established to compete with the Nigerian Bar Association.
We are not competitors to other arms of the legal profession, but complementary to their work because we serve the same goal, she said.
Why this matters for Eswatini
Fani-Kayode's portfolio covers three of the monarchies of the region: South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini. His elevation confirms that the man representing Nigeria's interests in Mbabane now carries one of his country's newer professional distinctions, a point of relevance for the Kingdom's diplomatic and business community.
The award also signals Nigeria's intention to formalise recognition for lawyers working outside the courtroom, in corporate suites, legislative chambers and diplomatic missions. As Eswatini continues to deepen its own engagement with continental partners, the professional standing of the envoys accredited to the Kingdom remains a matter of legitimate public interest.
